2003 CHRISTIAN WEST “SEE ALABAMA” AWARD
PRESENTED TO CHARLES PERRY

Christian West
(1996-2003)
“Christian was my best friend,
as well as my hero”
— Ray West, speaking about his son

The Christian West “See Alabama” Award will be presented annually by Sight Savers to a deserving child as a tribute to Christian’s positive attitude and cheerful manner even in the direst of circumstances. Dr. Marsha Swanson at the UAB Low Vision and Rehabilitation Clinic referred Christian to Sight Savers because of severe visual impairment resulting from terminal cancer.

Sight Savers provided Christian with a head-worn magnification device (Jordy) that enhances vision up close and at a distance. Christian showed obvious intelligence and a keen interest in quickly learning to use this device, which enabled him to better visualize his immediate surroundings. He used the Jordy on a Make-A-Wish Foundation sponsored trip to Disney World shortly before he passed away.

Established in his memory by Sight Savers, The Christian West “See Alabama” Award is a $500.00 grant to cover expenses for the recipient and family to take a trip to the Alabama State Park Resort of their choice. The annual recipient of this award exemplifies the courage and optimism of Christian West.

Charles Perry, recipient of the 2003 Christian West “SEE ALABAMA” Award, presented by Sight Savers

The recipient of the 2003 Christian West “See Alabama” Award is Charles Perry, of Jefferson County. Although he has severe visual impairment, his enthusiasm for life is inspirational. Sight Savers provided Charles with a closed circuit television magnifier (CCTV) to improve his vision and enhance his education. Charles’ CCTV is outfitted with voice-command because his legal blindness is complicated by severe cerebral palsy, making it difficult to manually control the equipment. Charles uses his CCTV to read, allowing him to do his homework and better keep pace with his classmates.

Charles’ unique personality and positive attitude have allowed him to gracefully handle his physical challenges and make great advances. He is extremely motivated to help other children with similar challenges, making himself available to participate in events designed to help needy children.
