Our mission is to coordinate timely, comprehensive eye care with follow-up services for Alabama's under served children.
Our goal is for these services to be used as building blocks in achieving a first-rate education and quality of life.
Over 200 Alabama children who are legally blind or blind have entered our Rehabilitation Services Program since 2001.
The Sight Savers Rehabilitation Department helps families with the following services:
- Determine eligibility of each child for free eye care
- Coordinate comprehensive low vision examinations
- Remind guardian(s) of upcoming appointments
- Follow-up after appointments
- Arrange transportation to appointments when necessary
- Obtain treatments for children who are blind or have low vision (legally blind), including vision ads such as
:
- CCTVs (Closed Circuit Television Magnifiers)
- Magnifiers, software & other vision aids
- Corrective Lenses
- Surgeries
- Assistive Technology, Braille & orientation/mobility training for children who are blind
- Other prescribed treatments.
- Delivery and one-on-one training for parents and children
- Follow up on each child at least once a year
Sight Savers works with the UAB Low Vision and Rehabilitation Clinic to coordinate fully equipped traveling low vision clinics around the state. Doctors bring their examination equipment and travel with Sight Savers to conduct low vision evaluations. Once the children's needs are determined and vision aids prescribed, Sight Savers staff trains the children and their families on how to use the closed circuit television magnifiers and other assistive technology. The equipment is then immediately available for families to take home.

Dr. Dawn DeCarlo completes Zachary's low vision exam.
SIGHT SAVERS is the only organization in Alabama to provide free vision aids in the homes of children with low vision.
