What Parents Should Know

Although screenings can identify the potential for a vision problem, only a comprehensive vision examination performed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist can diagnose and treat that problem.

Screening agencies in Alabama have chosen to refer over 90% of all Alabama children who fail vision-screenings to Sight Savers. Sight Savers is the recognized STANDARD for follow-up eye care services in Alabama. Our child referral network, volunteer eye care provider network, and Sight Savers’ staff work as a team to ensure that each child receives world-class eye care—from initial examination to completion of treatment.

Treatments provided by Sight Savers include the following:

* Eye Exams

* Eyeglasses

* Medication

* Surgery

* Vision Therapy

* Vision aids for children with low vision

Each child’s case is managed by patient coordinators who contact referral agencies and parents for needs assessment. This dedicated crew makes appointments, reminder calls, arranging transportation, rescheduling appointments, and final follow-up care to ensure that each child receives the eye care they deserve. In the last five years, this program has grown from its base in Jefferson County to a statewide program serving close to 25,000 children annually. Managed growth, dedicated staff and devoted volunteers have combined to create a unique program that adopts and meets the eye care needs of Alabama’s children.

Under the state contract with the Alabama Department of Education, Sight Savers provides statewide follow-up eye care services to school children that fail vision-screenings. Alabama’s Childhood Vision Health Program encompasses vision-screening and follow-up services for all kindergarten, second grade and fourth grade students. This program has made Sight Savers of Alabama a national model for childhood vision health.
